Demolition of another building on Charlotte Street has started this week with the arrival of steel girders onto the pavement in front and scaffolding at the rear in Charlotte Mews.
The facade of the former Swiss Club at 74 Charlotte Street, Fitzrovia, will be retained but the rest of the building will be completely demolished. In recent years it was home to Charlotte Street Blues and before that it was Jamie’s Bar.
Camden Council had refused permission in 2012 to demolish the unlisted 18th century property in the conservation area after the Charlotte Street Association led opposition to the plans. But the applicant won permission in 2013 from a government inspector after an appeal.
The Georgian building will be demolished behind the four-storey Charlotte Street facade and rebuilt as a five-storey building, including a new mansard roof. There will be an excavation to create a restaurant at basement and ground floors, and four flats on the upper floors.
