Summer 2014 events in and around Fitzrovia

Fitzrovia News will be taking a well-earned break for a few weeks, so you’ll have to amuse yourselves. But we don’t want to leave you totally helpless, so we’ve cobbled together some happenings for you to enjoy.

Saturday 28 June: 10am to 5pm. Fitzrovia Festival. Exhibition, browse and buy bookstall, guided walk, information about the neighbourhood. Fitzrovia Neighbourhood Association, 39 Tottenham Street, London W1T 4RX.

Saturday 28 June: 12noon to 6pm. FITzrovia and Bloomsbury Store Street Sports Day (part of London Festival of Architecture). Store Street, WC1.

Saturday 28 June: 11am to 4pm. Architectural Corner Shop & Green Living Grocer: Open for Business. Drop in to the launch of the FCBS Corner Shop. Activities for kids and adults. Design your ideal Pic ‘n’ Mix home. Featuring plants by Grants and Take Away Gardens. Afternoon Tea. Everyone welcome. 20 Tottenham Street, W1.

Saturday 28 JunePride in London. An inclusive LGBT+ event that provides a platform for all parts of the community to campaign about the issues that are most important to them and to celebrate a more happily diverse and inclusive city and nation. Various events throughout the day.

Monday 30 June to Sunday 6 July: Fitzrovia Restaurant Week aka Feast@Fitzrovia. The Fitzrovia Partnership will launch its first ever, week-long food festival. Fitzrovia is well-known for its culinary diversity and is home to a wide variety of food options. Everyone is invited to enjoy everything from Michelin starred food to the Friday Chilli Challenge. Eateries both large and small will be showcasing special menus and promotions as well as taking part in a number of bespoke events throughout the week.

Tuesday 1 July: 7pm to 8.30pm. Fitzrovia News editorial and social meeting. Come and meet the neighbours at this regular monthly meeting where we discuss all things related to Fitzrovia life. Fitzrovia Neighbourhood Association, 39 Tottenham Street, London W1T 4RX.

Saturday 5 July: 1pm to 4pm. Collingham Gardens Nursery Summer Fete celebrating 50 years 1964-2014. Opened by Frank Dobson MP. Featuring – Bouncy Castle, Games, Drumming Circle, Barbeque, Cocktail Bar, Raffle, Arts and Crafts and lots more. Historical exhibition about the site which has had a fascinating and quite gruesome past. The land was previously a burial site (part of one of the first burial sites not located next to a church), it was an anatomy school, the site of a suspected murder and was subsequently left by a Philanthropist “for the use of children forever” in the 1930s. Collingham Gardens Nursery, Henrietta Mews, London WC1N 1NP.

Sunday 6 July: Teddy Bears picnic, 3pm to 5pm, Fitzrovia Children’s Playground, 54 Whitfield Street, W1T 4ER. Face painting, food, music, and fun.

Monday 7 July to Friday 25 July:  Solo exhibition of works by illustrator and mapmaker Katherine BaxterPrivate View – 10 July 6 – 9pm. Mondays – Fridays 9.00am – 6.00pm, Saturdays and Sunday by appointment only. The Coningsby Gallery 30 Tottenham Street, London W1T 4RJ

Wednesday 9 July to Friday 29 August: The Visual Revolution: Russian Avant-Garde Photography, Alexander Rodchenko & the Vkhutemas Workshop. Richard Saltoun Gallery, 111 Great Titchfield Street, London W1W 6RY.

Friday 11 July: 11am to 8pm. Bloomsbury and Holborn Summer Festival Business Day. 11am to 8pm with stalls, food and live music. Bloomsbury Square.

Saturday 12 July: Fitzrovia Community Garden official opening. 12pm to 4pm, Fitzrovia Community Centre, 2 Foley Street, W1W 6DL.

Saturday 12 July: 11am to 9pm Bloomsbury and Holborn Summer Festival Community Day. Bloomsbury Square.

Saturday 12 July: 7pm Book launch at the King and Queen pub 1 Foley Street. Paul Adams’ latest book “Written in Blood: A Cultural History of the British Vampire”. Paul will be introduced by David Farrant, who will talk about the Highgate Vampire, followed by a discussion by Paul about British vampires in film. All welcome. Snacks provided with drinks at bar prices. Copies of Written in Blood will be available for sale as well as Paul’s other paranormal books.

Friday 18 July to Sunday 3 August: Everyday 12–6pm. Jeehee Park: Elephant in the Room. An exhibition of multi-sensory sculptures by the South-Korean artist Jeehee Park. Hanmi Gallery, 30 Maple Street, London W1T 6HA.

Monday 21 July to Thursday 14 August: Monday to Friday, 9:30am to 6pm, Saturday, 10am to 5pm. Crossrail exhibition of station plans and public realm. NLA, The Building Centre, 26 Store Street, London, WC1E 7BT.

Friday 25 July to Tuesday 12 August: Pi Artworks, 55 Eastcastle St, (piartworks.com) Pi Artworks Summer Exhibition: Fatma Bucak, Lisa Slominski, Steven Morgana, Christian Newby, Theodoros Stamatogiannis, Farniyaz Zaker, 25 July – 12 August 2014.
